9 Day Northern Circuit Route

Overview

The Northern Circuit Route is Kilimanjaro’s longest and most scenic trail, offering excellent acclimatization and a very high summit success rate. This 9-day trek takes you around the northern slopes of the mountain with fewer crowds, diverse landscapes, and sweeping views of Kenya and Tanzania. It’s the ultimate way to experience Africa’s tallest mountain and reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the “Roof of Africa.”

Detailed Itinerary

Drive to Londorossi Gate for registration before starting the trek through rainforest. Spot colobus monkeys along the way before arriving at Mti Mkubwa Camp.

Continue through the forest and into moorland. Ascend steadily to Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas on Kilimanjaro. Overnight at Shira 1 Camp.

A gentle hike across the plateau, exploring the volcanic landscape with panoramic views. Acclimatization hike in the afternoon before camping at Shira 2.

Ascend to Lava Tower for acclimatization before descending to the remote Moir Hut, tucked beneath the Lent Hills.

Climb out of the Moir Valley, with the option of a Lent Hills acclimatization hike. Continue across the northern slopes to Buffalo Camp, with incredible views across Kenya.

Trek through valleys and ridges along Kilimanjaro’s northern circuit. Overnight at the secluded Third Cave Camp.

Gradual ascent across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. Arrive at School Hut, your base camp for the summit push. Early dinner and rest before the midnight climb.

Begin the summit attempt at midnight. Trek via Gilman’s Point (5,681m) and Stella Point (5,739m) to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise. After celebrating, descend to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.

Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Transfer back to Arusha/Moshi for relaxation.
