The Rongai Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border, and is one of the least crowded trails. This six-day climb offers a gradual ascent with beautiful wilderness scenery and a high success rate. The route passes through forests, moorlands, alpine desert, and finally leads to the ice-capped summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
After registration at Marangu Gate, transfer to Rongai Gate where the trek begins. The trail passes through farmlands and pine forest before reaching Simba Camp for dinner and overnight.
A steady hike through moorland with wide views across Kenya’s plains. The trail continues to Second Cave Camp, where you’ll rest overnight.
The route leads upward across open moorland, with views of Mawenzi Peak. Hike through valleys before arriving at Kikelewa Camp.
A short but steep climb takes you up grassy slopes with panoramic views. The trail ends at Mawenzi Tarn, situated beneath towering Mawenzi Peak, where you camp by the tarn lake.
Cross the lunar-like Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks before reaching Kibo Hut, your base camp for the summit push. Early dinner and rest before the midnight ascent.
Start the summit attempt at midnight. Ascend slowly via Gilman’s Point (5,681m) to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, descend back to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue to Horombo Hut for overnight.
Descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate before being transferred back to Arusha/Moshi.
